Sigh. It’s that time again. Back to school shopping. How I look back on those days with such fond memories. It was always such an exciting time. It was of course sad because summer was ending, but it was fun to pick out new clothes and supplies for the upcoming school year. I love the commercials advertising the sales on school supplies because it reminds me of how lucky I am to not have to spend a million dollars yet on back to school products. Well, I do admit, my daughter has to bring a snack to preschool . And I might spend a few extra dollars on a cute monogrammed snack bag. Well, as I often do, I started drifting off to la la land yesterday. I think it was during one of those Staples “easy button” commercials that aim to be funny but really just aren’t cutting it for me. I started to reminisce about my favorite back to school supplies and clothes…..yes….thoughts of leg warmers and smurfs filled my brain. Look out Mr. Michael J. Fox….it’s my turn to go back to 1983. I was 8 years old and back to school shopping was RADICAL! TOTALLY AWESOME! And also AND NOW YOU KNOW AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE! G I JOOOOWWWWWWWW. Ok, enough now. What did I need for school THAT year….the year of the My Little Pony Stable With Real Working Barn Doors and Pony Brush? Yup, you know it….the TRAPPER KEEPER. There is actually a facebook page you can become a fan of, devoted to the all time organizer for the organized kid. Or just the kid growing up in the ’80’s. Click here to see the facebook page. Here are a few other things below that were most important for back to school in the 1980’s for me. Maybe you remember them too.

The ultimate back to school item....Trapper Keeper!

I think it was basically a piece of wood with wheels and you laid on them on your stomach. I am just speaking out of experience I guess. I’m no expert, but I can see the difference in my own child after she comes in, cheeks flushed from running outdoors. Here’s a quote from the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s website, www.kidsource.com, “It is a widely held view that unstructured physical play is a developmentally appropriate outlet for reducing stress in children’s lives, and research shows that physical activity improves children’s attentiveness and decreases restlessness.”

There ya go. Now, lace up those sneaks and meet me on the swings.

Front to back, side to side. Front to back, side to side. Oh, hello. Sorry, I didn’t see you there. No, I’m not practicing a new dance move. I’m trying to decide what kind of stroller to get. With one on the way in November, and a three year old, I think I need to get something.

So I’ve been asking advice from other parents with more than one child. It seems as though a lot of parents with children around the same age difference as mine will be, prefer the sit down/stand up one. The kind the older child can either have a seat or stand up in the back where you push the stroller. Some think the side to side one is better, easier, and folds up smaller for the car. And some just liked what was given to them for free from someone who is through with strollers.

Here’s the way I’m seeing it…do I want the two to pull each other’s hair from the side? Or would a quick pony tail tug work better for the one who might be angry in the “back seat”. Would it be more fun for the little one to be entertained by the bigger one by sitting side to side? Which one is going to make it easier for me while shopping? Do the front to back ones feel like I’m pushing 100 stacked grocery carts back into the market? Do they make face to face ones? Like a carnival ride that lasts too long. I guess I’m just looking for ease. I don’t want to feel like I’m pushing an elephant through the doors when walking into a store. There is NOTHING like a great “stroller struggle” upon entering a store. If you’ve ever manipulated a stroller and a door….you know the drill. You might as well place 12 plates on your head and spin basket balls on each finger while pushing the stroller through. And someone is trying to help you and you’re like, “I got this, I really do, I’m fine, nothing to see here”. So, if you have anymore advice, let me know. Leave me a comment! Here are a few I have been looking at that don’t cost a fortune:
